Grosjean's Gritty Success

France's top player Sebastien Grosjean, seeded 13th in Wimbledon, reached
the fourth round after his victory over qualifier Wesley Moodie in four
sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
The match didn't start so easily for the Frenchman, as his South African
opponent, ranked 147th in the world, showed from the start that he was
equally ready for long rallies from the baseline as from the net. Both
players also relied on their serve (with a first serve timed at an average
of 117 mph for Grosjean and 114 mph for Moodie) as well as their volleys,
which were especially successful for the South African in the first set.
But the one who best used his serve today was undoubtedly Grosjean: he served
no less than seven aces in the first set, compared to Moodie's four. But
the qualifier stuck to his game and the first set finished in a tiebreak.
Grosjean, who managed to come back from 2-5 to 5-5 thanks to three aces,
eventually lost it 5-7.
The Frenchman started the second set in much better form, leading 4-0
just 20 minutes after play resumed. Moodie managed to claim two games but
Grosjean soon had the set 6-2 in front of a passionate crowd on Court 18.
The last two sets were much more disputed between the two players. Moodie
led 4-3 in the third set, but Grosjean showed his greater big-match
experience to step up the tempo and take the next three games. The fourth
set followed a similar pattern, and Grosjean won the match after two hours
and fifty minutes of play.
This season is turning out to be particularly fruitful for the 25-year-old
Frenchman, who was the Runner-Up against Andy Roddick at the grasscourt
Queen's Club tournament earlier this month. But his next challenge will be a
tough one - either the French Open Champion Juan Carlos Ferrero or the
veteran Armenian Sargis Sargsian.
