Not a Loit to Offer
Saturday, June 28, 2003
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova stormed to a straight sets victory over
Emilie Loit of France today, to make it through to the last 16 of
the Ladies' Singles.
From the outset, Kuznetsova's vigorous double-handed backhand was
a key weapon in the 6-1, 6-2 destruction of her stunned Cherbourg-based
opponent who had difficulty coping with her powerful drives.
In her sixth Wimbledon appearance, Loit seemed to be doing everything
possible to lose. She completed her second service game in the same manner
as the first, double faulting and handing Svetlana a 4-0 lead.
In stark contrast, Kuznetsova was serving with the force and accuracy
of Tomahawk laser-guided missiles. At 0-30 down in the fifth game the
eastern European delivered two first class aces to level the game at
30-30 but failed to convert the break point and Kuznetsova took a 5-0 lead.
The Russian's ruthless aggression continued into the second set. When
Loit tried to match the power of the 33rd seed, balls sprayed wide. In
what seemed like two minutes, the Russian had established a 4-0 lead
in the second set and she romped to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
However, Emilie Loit may get a chance for revenge in the Ladies'
Doubles. If Svetlana Kuznetsova and partner Martina Navratilova win their
fourth round tie and Loit, with compatriot Nathalie Dechy, make it to the
last eight, then the pairings will battle it out for a place in the
semi-finals.
