Grosjean Ousts Ferrero
Tuesday, July 1, 2003
Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean, the No. 13 seed, has defeated the French
Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in four sets today, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2),
7-6 (7-3). The match, which was suspended last night with Grosjean leading
two sets to one, resumed on Court 1 following Kim Clijsters' victory over
Italy's Silvia Farina Elia.
The pair continued as they left off on Monday, matching each other almost
point for point. Down 6-5 on Grosjean's serve, Ferrero saved a first match
point by making a rare foray to the net. He earned a break point with an
unforced forehand error by Grosjean, and took the game when a dropshot by
the Frenchman landed in the bottom of the net.
The Frenchman raised his game a notch in the tiebreak, scampering to
dropshots and finding the lines with blistering groundstrokes. Luck
was on Grosjean's side, too - a net cord set up an easy passing shot
to give him another match point. He finished the contest with his 17th
ace, and a puff of chalk.
Grosjean, Runner-Up in the recent Queen's Club grasscourt tournament,
now plays Britain's Tim Henman in tomorrow's quarter-finals of the
Gentlemen's Singles.
