Grosjean Ends Henman's Dream
Thursday, July 3, 2003
France's Sebastien Grosjean has ended the annual bid of Tim Henman to
deliver a local victory in the Gentlemen's Singles, by winning their
rain-interrupted quarter-final today.
Grosjean won 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, finishing off the match quickly
after their match resumed at 2-1 to Henman, on serve, in the fourth set.
He will play either Mark Philippoussis or Alexander Popp in the semi-finals.
The 13th seed was too strong and too consistent for Henman, who was
aiming to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals for the fifth time in his
career. No Briton has won the Gentlemen's Singles at SW19 since Fred
Perry was successful in 1936.
The match was spread over two days because of rain delays, and took
exactly three hours to complete. Grosjean dictated much of the play,
striking winners from the baseline and regularly passing Henman or
forcing an error.
The Briton, who has battled a shoulder injury over the last year, made
many unforced errors as well, perhaps a legacy of his relative lack of
match practice.
