Scud Sinks Grosjean
Friday, July 4, 2003
One match form destiny: Australia's Mark Philippoussis is the first
player into this year's Gentlemen's Singles final after a clinical
straight-sets victory against Sebastien Grosjean.
The unseeded Philippoussis defeated the 13th seed 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-3,
unleashing his powerful serve to overwhelm his higher-ranked opponent.
On Sunday the so-called "Scud" will meet the winner of the semi-final
between Andy Roddick of the United States and Roger Federer of Switzerland.
It will be his second Grand Slam final - he lost to compatriot Patrick Rafter
in the US Open final in 1998.
Despite being unseeded, the Australian has been one of the favourites to
win Wimbledon since the tournament started, thanks to his huge serve and
heavy groundstrokes. He has long been tipped for greatness at SW19, but
has suffered repeated injuries to his left knee.
But today there was no sign of knee troubles, nor his other bogey -- a
lack of mental focus -- as he dispatched Grosjean with a controlled display
of power tennis.
"I don't think Sebastien played his best tennis today and I think I took
advantage," Philippoussis told the BBC after the match. Asked how he felt
about reaching the final after so many injuries, he said "to be quite
honest, I don't know. I'm not really feeling much -- it's not really
sunk in yet."
