Nadal Nearly Flawless; Will Face Friend Ferrer Next
By Erin Bruehl
Sunday, September 2, 2007
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not make the first set easy for world
No. 2 Rafael Nadal. The Frenchman, ranked No. 74 in the world
and playing for the first time in the men's draw, matched Nadal
seemingly shot for shot as the set stayed on serve and moved
to a tiebreak.
But Nadal prevailed in the tiebreak and took the match over
from there, winning 10 of the next 11 games to win in straight
sets, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-1, and advance to the fourth round.
The Spaniard played nearly flawlessly, committing just 14
unforced errors, winning 81 percent of his first serves and never
losing his serve. Left knee tendonitis has bothered Nadal in this
tournament, but it was not so much a factor for the No. 2 seed
in this match as he moved around the court extremely well and
never called for a trainer.
"Well, when I arrive sometimes a little bit with force to any ball,
some ball, depends of the ball, I feel a little bit. But I'm very
happy today about my knee," Nadal said.
Tsonga, the 2003 US Open junior boys champion, displayed a
powerful forehand and had 19 winners in the first set to 12 for
Nadal but had 12 unforced errors in the set to just four for the
Spaniard. The first set moved to the tiebreak where Nadal took
a 4-2 lead and several errors from Tsonga helped him out. He
won the tiebreak and the set when the Frenchman sent a serve
return wide.
The second set stayed on serve until the sixth game when
Tsonga’s errors cost him the game and gave Nadal the first
break of the match. With a serve and volley technique, the
Frenchman missed three straight shots as Nadal went up 4-2.
The No. 2 seed never looked back as Tsonga’s errors (37
unforced errors for the match to 30 winners) continued to
hurt him. Nadal made few mistakes and hit 29 winners.
" I play good today. Today and second round I play so much
better. I'm happy about my game from today and two days
ago," Nadal said. "I am playing well. Sure, it's not easy play
like this, and this -- well, it's more difficult to play good if
you have some problem, like me. So I'm very happy about
that, because when I go on court I'm playing at a very good
level and if I don't feel the pain. I can play so much better
because I don't think about the knee."
In the second set, Nadal earned the break again in the eighth
game to win the set and was a perfect two for two in converting
break points for the set.
The third set was much of the same as Nadal was just not
missing shots. Tsonga held his serve in the sixth game for
the first time in the set to applause from the crowd in Arthur
Ashe Stadium, who appreciated how hard he played against
the world No. 2.
Tsonga also displayed a strong serve that reached as fast as
136 mph and also had seven aces. He won 65 percent of his
first serves and only 50 percent of his second serves.
In the fourth round, Nadal will play his friend David Ferrer of
Spain, the No. 15 seed, who advanced with a five-set victory
over David Nalbandian.
