Bartoli Rolls Over Glatch
By Lisa Zimmerman
Monday, August 27, 2007
Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli's coasted through a 6-1, 6-1 first round win
over American Alexis Glatch. The two faced off on the Grandstand court
under a cloudless sky, and, in just 59 minutes, the 22-year-old, 2007
Wimbledon runner-up moved on to round two.
Glatch, 17, who missed six months following last year's US Open after
she broke both arms falling off a motorized scooter, showed a few glimmers
of potential, but could not remain consistent enough to pull out a victory.
With 28 unforced errors to Bartoli's 12, she struggled to put points together
and by the end of the first set already had a look of resignation on her face.
The two were fairly matched in terms of aces (Bartoli had five to Glatch's
four), but Bartoli won 83 percent of her first service points compared to
Glatch's 58 percent. In terms of rallies, Glatch played mostly from the
baseline and could not keep up with Bartoli, who was much more comfortable
approaching the net.
Glatch has spent most of the 2007 season on the ITF Circuit and took the
title at the ITF/Southlake TX-USA. In the second set, down 5-0, she briefly
rallied and held serve. Bartoli, ranked No. 10 and having the best year of
her career, made quick work of the next game and took the match.
Bartoli will next face the winner of Sara Errani vs. Renata Voracova.
