Ivanovic Battles Through to Third Round By Clair Maciel Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Based on her performance in the second round against France’s Aravane Rezai, Australian Open runner-up Ana Ivanovic appears poised to make a deep run in this year’s US Open tournament. It took just over an hour for Ivanovic to walk away with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rezai and reach the third round, equaling her career-best US Open appearance. Last year, Ivanovic fell to Serena Williams in the third round as the No. 16 seed; this year her quarter includes Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic. In this, Rezai's second appearance in the US Open, she posed quite a threat to Ivanovic as a second-round opponent. Last year, in her 2006 Open debut, Rezai took down two top-20 seeds, No. 15 Anna-Lena Groenefeld and No. 20 Maria Kirilenko, en route to the fourth round, where she lost to No. 5 Elena Dementieva. In June this year at Wimbledon she reached the third round. The No. 5 seeded Ivanovic overcame a sluggish first-set start that saw her commit a string of uncharacteristic errors that led to a break of serve in the first game. But by the end of the match, she had pulled her game together with 22 winners to Rezai’s eight. "It was a very slow start for me," Ivanovic said. "It was (my) first match, center court. I was a little bit nervous. She was obviously tough player to play against. I was going a little bit for too much, meaning I was going too much for the lines in the beginning of the first set especially." Rezai came armed with a fierce backhand that aided her reach a 3-1 lead before Ivanovic broke back to get to 3-3. It was the closest Rezai came to taking a set off Ivanovic, as the 19-year-old Serbian stormed back to sweep the next three games and claim the first set with an ace at love. Ivanovic continued to use her serve-and-volley game for a 3-0 lead in the second set. But give credit to the 20-year-old Rezai, who consistently went for every shot like she had nothing to lose. Ivanovic put away the match on the Frenchwoman’s serve, throwing her arms in the air in victory as Rezai sent a shot wide. Ivanovic has won two titles this year, at Berlin and Los Angeles, while Rezai was runner-up at Istanbul. Looking ahead, she commented on the "tough opponents" she stilll had to overcome. But speaking of her experience this year in Paris, she remembered thinking prior to the finals, "Oh my God, I can maybe win a Grand Slam." It didn't happen at Roland Garros, but it may at Flushing Meadows. The next challenger standing in the way of that dream is Russian Vera Dushevina, who defeated fellow countrywoman Ekaterina Bychkova in straight sets Wednesday. But it’s Venus who Ivanovic has had her eye on, saying she would like to challenge her in the fourth round if both make it through. “It's not a big secret that this part of the draw is much harder,” she said of her quarter of the draw. “There's many good players. Also hopefully I can win my next match and then play against Venus again. We had tough one in Wimbledon just few months ago. I would really be excited to play against her. I never beat her. But I think this is different tournament, different circumstances. I am feeling even fitter than I was in Wimbledon. So I would really like to play against her. I definitely have a chance.” ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM - Women's Singles - 2nd Round Aravane Rezai FRA 3 1 Ana Ivanovic SRB (5) Winner 6 6 Match Facts - Ivanovic served up seven aces to Rezai's one. - Ivanovic presented a solid net game, winning points on eight of 10 approaches. - This is Rezai's seventh career Grand Slam singles appearance. - Ivanovic now leads their head-to-head matchup 2-0 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.104.135.59
