Sixteen-year-old Richard Gasquet of France, the top seed in the boys'
singles event, captured the US Open boys' singles title, defeating
No. 5 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, 7-5, 6-2, in the final. The victory
gave the young Frenchman his second junior Grand Slam title of the
year. He also won the championship at Roland Garros earlier this summer.
The violins that were playing outside of court 11 during the match
served as poetic backdrop for the 2002 boys' final. In between streams
of music, Gasquet and Baghdatis would serve up an impressive match,
pleasing many fans who have never seen the two juniors play.
Baghdatis tried to use his strong serve and speedy footwork to pick apart
Gasquet, yet true to form, the Frenchmen, with many aces up his sleeve,
forced Baghdatis to make many errors.
At the start of the match Gasquet looked shaky, as he double-faulted
and sent balls flying just wide and long, atypical of his stellar winners
and consistency. It would take until game 10 before Gasquet would settle
his service games, pulling some aces on Baghdatis.
Baghdatis saw his break at 4-3 disappear, as two double faults would
bring him to 0-30. Gasquet answered with two exquisite points to break
back. A dumbfounded Baghdatis, who acted as if he had won after breaking
Gasquet previously, got sloppy and handed over the first set to Gasquet.
Gasquet continued to roll in the second set, winning many points off of
Baghdatis' second serve. Baghdatis over-hit a forehand, sending it sailing
long to crumble at 7-5, 6-2. An elated Gasquet was beaming as he accepted
the junior boys' trophy for 2002.
