Elsewhere, up-and-coming French teenager Richard Gasquet was not so
lucky. The 16-year-old phenom, who played his way into the French
Open before losing a tough first-round encounter with eventual champion
Albert Costa, lost to hard-serving Belgian Dick Norman. The 6'8"
left-handed Norman, seeded 17th, banged his way to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win,
and now must face No.1-seed Burgsmuller for a spot in the main draw.
Another French teenager fared much better than Gasquet. Nineteen-year-old
Nicolas Thomann, ranked 166, surprised seventh-seeded George Bastl of
Switzerland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, and now needs just one more win
to qualify for his first US Open.
