The fifth meeting for friends and Davis Cup teammates, Frenchmen Arnaud
Clement and Sebastian Grosjean, would favor Clement, who defeated his
fellow countryman in a 3 hour and 44 minute, five set marathon 6-3, 3-6,
4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Clement breezed through the first set, winning 76% of his first serves,
and jumping out to an early lead at 3-0.
However, Clement would run across some difficulty in the second set,
squandering his early lead to lose the second set 6-3.
A third set would bring the two competitors closer, as they would each
battle back from breakpoints to go on serve at 4-4, before Grosjean
prevailed at 6-4.
Early breaks would mark the theme of this match, as Clement broke to go
up 3-0 in the fourth set and again in the fifth set 2-0. The two
appeared evenly matched and the score went back and forth, much to the
delight of the enthusiastic crowd, until Clement broke one last time to
take the final set 6-4.
Enduring the five-setter to head into Round Three added another chapter to
Clement's impressive track record at the US Open.
Awaiting Clement is Guillermo Coria.
