Maybe it was the heat after several cool, rainy days, but neither No. 28
seed Fernando Gonzalez nor Arnaud Clement ever seemed to pick up any real
momentum during their three-set fourth round match, which Gonzalez took
6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
With the exception of an ace from the Frenchman Clement as the first point
of the first game, both players turned in rather lackluster performances
throughout. Each player seemed visibly irritated at every poor shot and
never appeared to settle into the match. With break point conversions at
just 40% for Gonzalez and 20% for Clement, both missed numerous opportunities
to capitalize on the other's mistakes.
However, the 22-year old Gonzalez, playing in only the second US Open of
his career, did rack up a total of 15 aces to Clement's nine helping the
Chilean put the match away in just under two hours.
Gonzalez advances to the quarterfinals where he will meet Sjeng Schalken
