Fifth-seed Amelie Mauresmo of France rolled past
Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia in straight sets on
the Grandstand, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Last week at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven,
Connecticut, Mauresmo pulled out of the draw midway
through the second set against Jennifer Capriati in the
semifinals, citing an undisclosed illness.
Today, Mauresmo appeared well-rested and near the
top of her game, dispatching Widjaja in just more than
an hour's work.
The Frenchwoman's first serve topped out at 107 mph
and she double-faulted just once. Despite 26 unforced
errors, Mauresmo quadrupled Widjaja's winner total
with 25.
In 16 break point opportunities, Mauresmo converted
on six of them, good for a 33 percentage.
Playing in her third-consecutive US Open, fifth overall,
Mauresmo has had excellent results in Flushing, reaching
the semifinals last year and the quarterfinals in 2001.
Mauresmo is in the same quarter of the women's
singles draw as world No. 1 Kim Clijsters of
Belgium.
She will play the winner of the Stephanie Cohen vs.
Aloro-Alina Jidkova in the second round on Wednesday.
