Mauresmo Rains on Kirilenko's Grand Slam Parade

Young Russian qualifier Maria Kirilenko's impressive
run through the US Open had to end sometime. Today,
the confident, precision-hitting 16-year-old met more than
her match in fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo from France.
She lost 6-4, 6-2.
Kirilenko, currently ranked 170, has had a wild ride in her
first US Open, knocking off American Theresa Logar in
the first round and Anca Barna in the second. She looked
focused and calm against the athletic Mauresmo, 24, who
continually put her on the defensive with aggressive
approaches.
The most dramatic game of the match came in the second
set with Kirilenko serving at 0-2. The two battled through
several deuces; at one point Mauresmo cracked an overhead
down on Kirilenko only to have the Russian get to it and
smack a winner down the line. Mauresmo eventually won
the game, but Kirilenko showed serious ability to come up
with the goods when she was behind. Unfortunately, it
wasn't enough to buy her a single break point in the match.
Both players covered the court well, coming to net more
than 20 times each and treating the crowd to a more wily
display of skill than repetitive baseline rallies. Simply put,
Mauresmo was stronger. She looked it. She counted on it.
And she made a habit of finding the open court before her
opponent had time to turn her head.
Mauresmo has yet to lose a set in this year's US Open, her
fourth. She will face the winner of Daniela Hantuchova
v. Tamarine Tanasugarn in the next round.
-Mauresmo was a semifinalist in last year's US Open, beating
Kim Clijsters and Jennifer Capriati before losing to No. 2 seed
Venus Williams.
-Mauresmo reached the quarterfinals of the French Open this year.
-Kirilenko was the 2002 US Open Junior Girls' Champion.
