Tsonga Upsets No. 1 Seed, Wins First Junior Grand Slam

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France pulled an upset over No. 1 seed Marcos
Baghdatis to win the boys' title at the US Open Junior Championships.
He beat the Cyprian in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.
While the much-ballyhooed Baghdatis, who works up every serve with a
precise, eight-bounce drill where one ball goes through his legs, had
more crafty shots in his arsenal, he lacked the power that Tsonga showed.
Tsonga got an early break in the first with white-hot strokes that left
Baghdatis committing errors left and right. Baghdatis scored his own break
in the sixth game, as Tsonga drifted from the baseline only to dish a ball
into the net and watch Baghdatis' winners whiz by.
In the first-set tie-break, the 18-year-old players had to contend with
loud music emanating from in front of Arthur Ashe Stadium, but each kept
steady, staying even until Tsonga hit two huge serves -- one an ace and
one unreturnable -- to win it 7-4.
Baghdatis never seemed to get his groove back in the second set. He pulled
ahead in the first game, 0-40, on Tsgona's serve, but the Frenchman won the
next five points to hold. At 5-2, Baghdatis lunged for a ball and ripped his
shoe; he needed a medical time out to mend the hole and check on his jammed
foot.
But Tsonga showed no sympathy, unleashing great returns, and got a lucky
dropper that hit the tape to go up a break, 2-4. Serving for the match at
5-3, he showed steely determination, saving two break points with a
serve-and-volley game that now looked in sync.
Today, Tsonga evened his record against Baghdatis, 2-2. He most recently
lost to the Cyprian in the semifinals of this year's junior Australian
Open, which Baghdatis went on to win. This is his first Grand Slam title.
