The Frenchman, who is playing in only his fourth tournament of 2003 following a right wrist injury, reached the second round in the Tennis Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Miami last month. Sixth-seed David Nalbandian had little trouble disposing of 16-year-old wild card Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-0. The French teenager made his Monte Carlo debut last year and scored a first-round win over Franco Squillari before falling to Marat Safin. This year Gasquet had a harder time living up to the expectations of the Monte Carlo crowd. In the first set he managed to stay in the match, but in the second set he struggled with his serve and was broken three times. The Argentine captured the match when the Frenchman hit a forehand long. "Of course I'm disappointed. Emotionally it was tough for me today, and I was very, very nervous. Last year I played so well here and I wanted to do it again this year," said the Frenchman after the loss. "Even though you couldn't tell by the match today, the difference from one year ago is that I serve better and that I'm fitter physically." Nalbandian, who had a breakthrough season on the circuit when he won two ATP titles and reached the Wimbledon final last year, played in the Monte Carlo draw for the first time in 2002 and defeated Roger Federer before falling to Safin in the third round. -- french sensation... -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.70.206.23
