Top seed Lleyton Hewitt survived his second tough battle in as many days at the Rothenbaum after coming through a 3-hour, 36 marathon against Arnaud Clement to reach the third round at the Tennis Masters Hamburg. Just 24 hours after needing three sets in his first round match against Markus Hantschk, Hewitt fought back from the brink of defeat to move through with a 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(6) victory over the Frenchman, in what was the longest three-set match of the year - and the longest three-set match of Hewitt's career. Hewitt, a semifinalist in 2001, found himself 5-0 down in the opening set before fighting back to force a tie-break, which Clement eventually took on his sixth set point. The roles were reversed in the second set, as the 22-year -old Australian opened up a 5-0 lead only to see it disappear as Clement served to make it 5-all. But Hewitt held his nerve to break again to take the match into a decider, and with three more breaks of serve at the start of the final set, it was Clement who finally opened up a 3-1 lead. But Hewitt, playing in his first clay court tournament of the year, fought his way back to 4-4, only to see Clement break once again with some inspired play to serve for the match. However, Hewitt produced some stunning shots of his own to stay in the match, and as the final set went to the tie-break, it was Clement who opened up a 5-3 lead before Hewitt showed just why he is the World No. 1 to fight his way back and wrap up the victory on his second match point. Hewitt now faces No. 15 seed Fernando Gonzalez for a place in the quarterfinals after the Chilean recorded an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory over last week's Telecom Italia Masters champion Felix Mantilla. The last time they met was in the semifinals at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati last year, when Hewitt won in three sets. Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal caused the biggest upset of the day when he stunned second seed Carlos Moya 7-5, 6-4. Nadal, who at 16 years of age is 10 years younger than his compatriot, recovered from a break down early in both sets to record his first victory over his idol and reach the third round, where he will take on Gaston Gaudio for a place in the quarterfinals. Elsewhere on day three, defending champion Roger Federer continued his impressive clay court form with a 6-1, 6-1 win against qualifier Sargis Sargsian. The Swiss star, seeded No. 3 this year, is now 12-1 on clay and moved up to second place in the ATP Champions Race 2003 above Juan Carlos Ferrero. He now meets Mark Philippoussis, who defeated Xavier Malisse in straight sets. On what was a great day for the Argentines in Hamburg, Agustin Calleri became one of five players from the South American country to progress to the third round of a Tennis Masters Series event for the first time with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 4 seed Andy Roddick. Calleri, a winner in Acapulco and a finalist in Estoril this year, will now meet fellow countryman and 1999 finalist Mariano Zabaleta for a place in the quarterfinals. Zabaleta, who lost to Marcelo Rios in the final four years ago, recovered from the loss of the first set to defeat No. 14 seed Tommy Robredo. In the all-German battle on Centre Court, Australian Open finalist Rainer Schuettler defeated his friend Lars Burgsmuller in a close match to reach the third round for the first time since 1999. Schuettler, a semifinalist at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells and a quarterfinalist last week in Rome, came through 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to set up a meeting with No. 8 seed David Nalbandian, the Wimbledon finalist who overcame French qualifier Anthony Dupuis in three sets. Gaston Gaudio and No. 12 seed Guillermo Coria joined their fellow Argentines in the third round with victories over David Sanchez and Jarkko Nieminen respectively, while Mark Philippoussis and Mikhail Youzhny also progressed on Wednesday. Meanwhile, 2000 champion Gustavo Kuerten boosted his confidence with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Nikolay Davydenko, a winner this year in Adelaide and Estoril, while Guga's doubles partner Tim Henman won back-to-back matches for the first time since October 2002 (Basel) with a rain interrupted 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 victory over No.10 seed Sebastien Grosjean, who later withdrew from the doubles with a thigh injury. Kuerten now takes on South Africa's Wayne Ferreira, who recorded a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Spain's Feliciano Lopez, while Henman faces Olivier Rochus, the Beligian who saved two match points to defeat reigning Roland Garros champion and 1998 Hamburg winner Albert Costa 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.102.172 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.102.172 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.70.206.23 ※ 編輯: Escude 來自: 61.70.206.23 (05/15 19:10)
