Clement Sends Moya on Vacation

Being seeded doesn’t mean a thing. Spaniard Carlos Moya, No.4 on the ATP
Entry Rankings, was sent home early from the Tennis Masters Canada. It was
an epic battle, but in the end, France’s Arnaud Clement came out on top,
7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 in the first round of play.
It was the first upset of the Montreal tournament, which saw several rain
delays during the afternoon.
“Playing on a hard surface really put me off balance,” said Moya. “I’ve
never liked playing against him and I knew it would be difficult. Still, I
don’t think the rain delays were a factor in the match,” he said.
While Clement’s win sent one Frenchman into the second round, compatriot
Fabrice Santoro, a semifinalist here two years ago, was eliminated after
round one. 20-year-old Argentine Jose Acasuso beat him 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
