Mixed Day for French; Henman, Blake Advance
There were mixed fortunes for French players on the opening day
of the BNP Paribas Masters on Monday. 17-year-old Richard Gasquet
suffered an agonizing defeat at the hands of Argentine Gaston
Gaudio, blowing six match points on his way to defeat. Gasquet
claimed the first set with ease 6-1, but was not able to convert
any of his six match points in the second set tie-break as Gaudio
squeaked through 1-6, 7-6(11), 6-4 to book a second round meeting
with Tommy Robredo.
French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu saw three set points disappear
in his first set against Hicham Arazi as the Moroccan turned the
match around to win 7-5, 6-4 and advance to a second round meeting
with compatriot Younes El Aynaoui.
French qualifier Gregory Carraz fared better however, coming back
from a set down to defeat Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(3). Carraz,
who reached the third round at this year's US Open (l. to Coria),
had not won a TMS match since Toronto '96 and next faces No. 11
seed Sjeng Schalken. He was joined in the second round by two other
French qualifiers Nicolas Mahut, a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 winner over Jarkko
Nieminen, and Thierry Ascione, who scored a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win
over Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela. Veteran Fabrice Santoro became the
fourth Frenchman to advance to the second round on Monday, defeating
Max Mirnyi 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Tim Henman got his title challenge underway with a
straight sets win over Nikolay Davydenko. Henman, who has never
advanced past the third round in Paris, set up a blockbuster
second round clash with Frenchman Sebastian Grosjean. Wayne
Ferreira completed a disappointing European indoor season for
him, in which he has won just one ATP level match, when he lost
to Romanian Victor Hanescu, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Spaniard Albert Costa showed some impressive form on his way to
outlasting Argentine Mariano Zabaleta. Costa, who is fighting for
a spot in Spain's Davis Cup squad to face Australia, came through
6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5 and next faces recent Madrid finalist Nicolas
Massu. And in the final night match, American James Blake snapped
his four-match losing streak to claim his first victory of the
indoor season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Fernando Gonzalez.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Gasquet, on losing six match points:
"I have no criticism about it. It was just one point to win.
So it can succeed or it can fail. But apart from that, in my
whole game, there are many things I can improve. I played well
in the tiebreaker. But on match points I was not lucky and he
played well. This time it was against me; next time it will be
in my favor. Of course after having six match points, it's always
disappointing to lose."
Henman, on finishing 2003:
"As I said, there's nothing, I think, to lose. I've said before
that it's definitely been the most sort of challenging year for
me as a professional. I think I couldn't be more excited about
2004 already. And, normally at this time of year, you're so sort
of tired after such a busy schedule and so much tennis and
tournaments and traveling, this year is different. I feel very fresh."
On facing Grosjean next: "I suppose this is a good opportunity
to try and get some revenge on his home turf. He's played very
well here in the past and I think in all honesty there's a lot
more at stake for him than me. But I've got to try and use that
to my advantage because I want to continue to play well, and
there's probably that little bit of added pressure on him. I
certainly don't think there's too much for me to lose, but lots
to gain.
Santoro:
"After I won the first set, then the second set I just miss it
in a few seconds. The second important moment was in the beginning
the third set where I was able to be ahead in the score. That was
vital for me. I wanted to be ahead. I wanted to dominate the match.
Then 3-1, 4-1 was a relief."
Carraz:
"It's incredible to play in Bercy. The public was great in spite of
my difficulties in the beginning of the match. After the second set,
everything went better for me. I played in front of everybody, my
fiance, my family, and I was thinking, "If it can happen, it would
be beautiful." So now I can appreciate every moment of it."
Ascione:
"I felt confident. When I played that kind of match, it was a big
challenge. I'm fit and I was very eager to play. I was hungry for
a victory. So I'm very pleased; it was a beautiful match.
On facing Federer next: "I'm waiting for that match with a lot of
impatience against the No. 3 in the world. It's very important. I
played three rounds already. Plus, I have a day's rest, so it's great."
