BNP PARIBAS MASTERS
Paris, France October 29, 2003
Kuerten Downs Scud in Thriller; Henman Ousts Grosjean
Brazilian ace Gustavo Kuerten scored a dramatic late-night win over Mark Philip
poussis Wednesday night at the BNP Paribas Masters to end the Australian's hope
s of qualifying for the Tennis Masters Cup Houston. Kuerten saved five match po
ints in an epic second set tie-break, which he went on to claim 13-11. The Braz
ilian withstood 31 aces from the big-serving Australian and slammed down 19 of
his own on his way to a 6-7(5), 7-6(11), 7-6(1) victory. Kuerten, who won the t
itle in St.Petersburg last week, faces Tim Henman next as he hopes to extend hi
s seven-match winning streak.
The highly anticipated clash between French favorite Sebastian Grosjean and Hen
man lived up to expectations, with Henman exacting revenge on his French oppone
nt who had beaten him on home soil at Queen's and Wimbledon this past summer. I
n a thrilling match lasting 2hrs 22 mins, Henman clawed his way back from a one
set deficit to edge through 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 and end Grosjean's hopes of qualifyi
ng for Houston.
Wimbledon champion Roger Federer eased his way into the third round with a 7-6(
5), 6-1 win over French qualifier Thierry Ascione. Federer, who had been strugg
ling with a back injury since losing in Basel last week, looked in good shape a
s he felt his way through a first set tie-break before running away with the se
cond. The Swiss star remains over 100 ATP Champions Race points behind Race lea
der Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andy Roddick, but still holds a shot at finishing t
he year as the World No.1.
No. 4 seed Guillermo Coria defeated Spain's Feliciano Lopez for the second time
in as many weeks, advancing with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win. Coria, who is already as
sured of his place in Houston, is in the hunt for his second Tennis Masters Ser
ies title of the year, following his win in Hamburg (d. Calleri).
French qualifier Gregory Carraz became the only French player to advance to the
third round when he stopped No. 11 seed Sjeng Schalken, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Carraz now has a 14-11 match record in 2003 and advances to his first career T
MS third round where he will face Jonas Bjorkman. The Swede, a finalist in Pari
s in 1997 (l. to Sampras), made short work of lucky loser Nicolas Lapentti who
was a last-minute replacement for the injured David Nalbandian.
In other matches, No. 5 seed Rainer Schuettler ended James Blake's Paris campai
gn with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win, while Andrei Pavel continued his return to form fo
llowing his injury lay-off with a win over Felix Mantilla. Jiri Novak dashed th
e hopes of the home crowd when he downed French veteran Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 4-
6, 6-0.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Henman: "To beat Grosjean on his home patch, there's an element of revenge. I w
ould have much rather won one of those matches at Queen's or Wimbledon. But I f
eel like, as I said, my game is moving in the right direction. It was a great a
tmosphere out there. I certainly haven't played many good matches here. It was
a lot of fun. And to come out on top adds to it."
Grosjean: "At the end of the match, the difference was very little. He put a li
ttle more pressure on me than I did, and Tim [Henman] served better than I did
in important moments. That made the difference. I beat him twice on grass, but
serving very well. Today, I didn't succeed in my first serves -- not as well as
in London."
Federer, on his end of season: "Last year, I was in the race for the Masters. T
his year, it's not the case like last year. So there's a lot less pressure. I f
eel better physically and mentally. I have more experience now, and I've won ma
ny more matches and I was able to win a match like today without wasting a lot
of energy."
On his back injury: "I just have hot cream on my back. I really have to say I d
idn't feel my back, so that's good. It's just prevention. When something happen
s like in Basel, I think there's not much I can do, you know. I was just unluck
y. But until now, I've been lucky with the injuries and I hope it's going to st
ay this way."
Carraz, on his recent progression: "I feel I've earned my place. I worked a lot
and it's paying off. I feel I'm in the right place. I'm not just wondering wha
t's happening. Of course I'm pleased to be there, but I must say I'm digesting
this progression properly."
Schuettler: "In the first set I was very disappointed I lost it. I was leading
with a break 3-1, then I lost the set 6-4, so I was a little bit upset about th
at. But I was happy I made an early break in the second set. Then in the third
I started to play better and better."
Santoro, on losing 6-0 in the third set: "At one stage, I was up 30-love on his
serve, and I didn't take this opportunity. Suddenly, it was 2-love and after t
hat, things went rapidly. I started trying to force too much, to try too much o
n my first serve. It didn't go well."
THURSDAY MATCHES
World No. 1 Ferrero is bidding to do the Paris "double" this week -- having alr
eady claimed the title at Roland Garros in June, he would join Andre Agassi ('9
9) as the only player to have picked up both trophies in the same year should h
e win in Bercy. The Spaniard takes on Jiri Novak, a player he leads 3-1 in thei
r head-to-head series.
Roddick, who trails Ferrero by just four points in the ATP Champions Race, take
s on Spain's Tommy Robredo. The Spaniard has yet to claim a set off Roddick in
five meetings, with their last encounter coming on grass at Wimbledon this year
. Meanwhile, Federer, who is seeking his seventh title of 2003, will do battle
against Roland Garros finalist Martin Verkerk, a player he defeated in straight
sets in their only previous meeting in Basel last year.
Gustavo Kuerten, who came through an epic encounter with Mark Philippoussis on
Wednesday night, takes on Tim Henman. Kuerten heads into the encounter on a sev
en-match winning streak while Henman will be looking for a repeat of the straig
ht sets win he had over the Brazilian in their last encounter in Cincinnati las
t year.
In other matches, Paradorn Srichaphan looks to continue his late bid to reach H
ouston when he faces Moroccan Hicham Arazi. The door to the Tennis Masters Cup
Houston is open for Srichaphan, who needs to win the title here in order to usu
rp Nalbandian in eighth place of the ATP Champions Race and claim the eighth sp
ot to the season finale. Recent Basel winner Guillermo Coria seeks to extend hi
s winning run to six matches when he faces Andrei Pavel and No. 5 seed Rainer S
chuettler faces an in-form Nicolas Massu.
