France's Cyril Saulnier defeated Great Britain's Greg Rusedski with a 6-2,
6-2 straight sets victory. Saulnier had a strong finish to the 2003 season,
finishing 86th in the ATP Champions Race and reaching the semifinals in
Tokyo. He also reached a career-high ranking of 84 in late October in the
ATP Entry Rankings.
Saulnier: "I was concentrating hard on my game and a lot of attention on
my return. It was a very good match for me, not a lot of errors. I’m very
happy."
"Last year I played a lot of qualifying (events), sometimes main draw, so
this is a little bit different. I'm a little bit more relaxed now, but I
just try to concentrate on my game. Maybe for him it was a bit difficult.
I returned well during the match and I didn’t let him have a lot of
occasions, keeping the pressure on him. It was the perfect match."
Rusedski: "I thought he played well but I didn’t really do too much today.
I didn’t handle the conditions well enough and I hit too many double faults.
If I’m not serving well, it puts me in a tough situation. He played well
today. I have to give him credit, he struck the ball well, but I didn’t
do enough out there. It’s only my second match back so I have to keep everything in perspective and try to play better next week. I can only improve from this performance."
QUARTERFINAL MATCHES
Playing in his first ATP quarterfinal since Delray Beach in March 2002,
France's Michael Llodra meets No. 2 seed Vince Spadea in their third career
meeting. The American finished in the Top 30 for the first time since 1999
by winning a career best 34 matches and advancing to four semifinals and
four quarterfinals during the 2003 season.
Slovakia's No. 1 Dominik Hrbaty, who finished in the Top 100 for the eighth
consecutive year, faces in-form Cyril Saulnier from France in their first
meeting.
