節錄
France's Michael Llodra, a qualifier to the event, advanced to his first
ATP final by upsetting No. 5 seed Taylor Dent in straight sets. Llodra,
a standout doubles player, won the 2003 Australian Open doubles title
with countryman Fabrice Santoro.
In the battle of the big serves, it was the left-handed Llodra who came
out on top. Llodra made 71 percent of his first serves for the match,
securing give aces along the way, while Dent was very wayward with a
first service percentage of just 46 percent and five double faults.
Llodra's strong return of serve put Hrbaty under frequent pressure. The
Frenchman broke serve in the 11th game of the final set, then held serve
to advance to the final.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Llodra: "I hit my returns very well, especially in the first four games.
Today my returns and passing shots where very good and against this type
on player ( Dent ) you have to be there to hit this kind of shot. This
year I want to be good in singles and I know I can be a good player so
this is a good start to the year and for the future."
"When I came to Adelaide I just wanted to play as many matches as I could
and I didn't think I would be in the finals. It will be a good day for me
in the final and I will try to do my best against Dominik. I have nothing
to lose. I'm going to try and put a lot of pressure on him and make some
returns and see what happens. I feel no pressure."
Dent: "My serve really dropped off a fair bit but I guess that is
understandable in the first tournament of the year. Llodra returned
really well though and hit a lot of cold winners of my serve which hasn't
happened too much before. I've played a lot of top guys and can't remember
anybody returning like that. If he keeps playing like that I will be very
interested to see what his ranking is at the end of the year. It was good
to reach the semi finals but I'm a little disappointed I couldn't go
further."
FINAL PREVIEW
Two surprise finalists have emerged at the AAPT Championships unseeded
Dominik Hrbaty from Slovakia and French qualifier Michael Llodra.
Hrbaty, a finalist in Auckland last year, will be playing his ninth ATP
career final. He is seeking his fourth career title.
Llodra will be competing in his first ATP career singles final. A standout
doubles player, he compiled a 34-13 doubles record with countryman Fabrice
Santoro last year and finished No. 5 in ATP Doubles Race standings. He and
Santoro won the Australian Open doubles title last year, reached the final
at TMS Monte-Carlo, TMS Roma, Metz, TMS Paris and the Tennis Masters Cup
Doubles - Houston.
On their only previous meeting in 2001 in St. Petersburg, Llodra defeated
Hrbaty in straight sets.
In doubles, Bob and Mike Bryan, the World No. 1 doubles players, meet
Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Llodra. Last year, the Bryans became the
first brothers to finish No. 1 with five titles and eight finals. They
won their first Grand Slam doubles title at Roland Garros. They also
claimed the Tennis Masters Cup Doubles - Houston, TMS Cincinnati, Barcelona
and Nottingham. Although Llodra's regular partner is Santoro, Clement has
secured two career doubles titles. Llodra is also seeking his third career
doubles title. This is his 10th career doubles final.
