ADELAIDE-AAPT CHAMPIONSHIPS
JANUARY 11, 2004
Hrbaty Wins Fourth ATP Title, Bryans Continue Run
Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty won his fourth career ATP title Sunday at the AAPT
Championships, easily defeating qualifier Michael Llodra of France in
straight sets. He picks up 35 points in ATP Champions Race 2004.
Hrbaty started brilliantly in the final, winning the first nine points of
the match. Llodra fought back to level the set at four games-all, but then
dropped his serve in the ninth game to allow Hrbaty to serve out the set,
6-4.
Hrbaty then played near flawless tennis in the second set to secure it
at-love in just 21 minutes. Hrbaty's accurate return of serve and the
windy conditions took away much of the effectiveness of Llodra's big
left-handed serve and allowed Hrbaty to dominate the match from the baseline.
This was Hrbaty ninth appearance in an ATP final, with the last three all
coming in the month of January. Last year, he advanced to the final in
Auckland (l. to Kuerten) during the second week of the 2003 season; his
last ATP victory came in Auckland in January 2001. Llodra won just two
ATP level matches last year and has already doubled that number in 2004.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Hrbaty: "It was one of the best finals that I have played, especially in
the second set where whatever I did everything went in. I was returning
well and serving great and against a guy like Llodra you need to do that."
"For sure it will be one final that I remember where I played my best
tennis. I wasn't nervous at all before the final and maybe because I was
so loose and not tense at all I played made some great returns and didn't
give him a chance. It was great to start the final well and find yourself
two love up in the first set because it shows the other guy that it won't
be an easy final for him. I hope I can carry on now to even still improve
my tennis."
Llodra: "Dominik played very good tennis and it was hard to play against
him when he made so few mistakes. I struggled with my serve a little in
the wind and the strong sun made it tough to play and he had much more
experience in finals than I did.
"Even though I lost I still feel positive about the week. It was my first
ATP final and it is a very good start to the year. I hope that this is the
start of a good year."
BRYANS WIN 15TH TITLE TOGETHER
Bob and Mike Bryan, who became the first brothers duo to finish No. 1 in
the ATP Doubles Race by winning five titles together last year including
the Tennis Masters Cup Houston, defeated the French tandem of Michael
Llodra and Arnaud Clement to win the AAPT Championships in Adelaide.
The Bryans have now won nine consecutive ATP matches after winning all five
matches at the year-end championships in Houston in November and four matches
in Adelaide this week. They are 15-8 lifetime together in finals.
