There was a contrast of fortunes on Centre Court earlier in the day when
Nicolas Escude marked his return from injury with a victory at the expense
of sixth seed Younes El Aynaoui, the 2002 Doha champion who suffered from
an ankle injury in his first round doubles match on Monday while playing
with Hicham Arazi.
Escude, who missed six months of 2003 after retiring from his second round
match at Wimbledon against Juan Carlos Ferrero with a groin injury, received
a wild card into Doha and defeated El Aynaoui 6-3, 6-0.
Elsewhere on day two, fourth seed Sebastien Grosjean recorded a 6-1, 7-5
victory over German qualifier Markus Hantschk, while eighth seed Agustin
Calleri of Argentina defeated Italy's Filippo Volandri in three sets.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Grosjean: "I'm happy to win the first match of the year. The first match
of the year is never easy, I'm happy with the way I was playing. I haven't
played since Paris two months ago. It was tough to finish the match, he was
playing well and had nothing to lose in the second set."
Escude: "It was the first match in six months for me. The first goal for me
was to be back on court and play a few matches. I've worked very hard the
last two months for this. I'm very happy to play and to win."
El Aynaoui: "He came in [to the net] a lot and was serving well. The first
set was tight, then he raised his level. I think he can go far this week.
I was focusing more on my leg than the game. I was scared to get more
injured. I'm sorry for the crowd. It's tough to play when you're not 100
percent. I wanted to play well in this tournament. There are very few
tournaments we get such good support like in Doha, Dubai and Casablanca."
