Ljubicic, making his first appearance in Doha, advanced to the semifinals
with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over fourth seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean.
Ljubicic, the 24-year-old from Croatia, reached four semifinals in 2003 in
Milan, Dubai, Bangkok and Basel before finishing the year at No. 41 in the
ATP Champions Race. It was his first victory over Grosjean in their three
meetings.
The other semifinal will be between French wild card Nicolas Escude, playing
in his first tournament since Wimbledon, and eighth seed Agustin Calleri of
Argentina. Escude overcame Hyung-Taik Lee 6-4, 6-2 to reach his first
semifinal since Marseille last year, while Calleri defeated Jonas Bjorkman
6-4, 6-4. Calleri captured the title in Acapulco and reached finals in
Estoril and Tennis Masters Hamburg in 2003.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Escude: "I enjoyed being on the court today. When I came here I didn't know
what would happen, I didn't play any matches for six months. I started to hit
balls in the beginning of November. I'm happy to be in the semifinals and play
the way I play in singles and doubles."
Ljubicic: "I was really enjoying playing today. It's one of the best matches
I think I've ever played. I just played well. I actually didn't think about
how to play him, I didn't think too much of what I should do.
"I feel extremely fit. I'm happy the way I feel now. I feel strong and fit.
I've played in 11 semifinals and I've only made it to one final. I need to
improve that record."
SEMIFINAL PREVIEW
In the first semifinal of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Friday, French wild
card Nicolas Escude faces eighth seed Agustin Calleri of Argentina in a
first-time meeting. Escude, playing his first tournament since recovering
from a hip injury that had ruled him out of action since Wimbledon, is
looking to reach his sixth career ATP final (3-2). Calleri, a winner in
Acapulco last year, is 1-3 in ATP finals (1-2 in 2003).
