Moya played his best match of the tournament to defeat rising Frenchman
Thierry Ascione 6-4, 6-4. Moya served seven aces and dropped just five
points on serve throughout the match, winning 22 of 23 points on his
first serve and 18 of 22 on his second serve. The Spaniard, who was
down match point during his second-round win over American Paul Goldstein,
did not face a break point against Ascione.
What the Players Said
Moya: “Today’s match has been my best of the week. Yesterday I didn’t
play so well but I still won and these matches give you a lot of confidence.
I thought I would be a little tired today but I was quite fresh.
“When I’m on court anything can happen. I can play very well like I did
today or not so well like I did yesterday. So I have to be very focused.
Tomorrow’s match will be very difficult but it’s very good to be in the
semifinals of the first tournament of the year.”
“Every match at the start of the year is a difficult match.”
Ascione: “He won because he served very well. It was very tough on my
serve because I was always under pressure.
“I’m very happy to have reached a quarterfinal in the first week of the
year. I played one very good match in the first round and I won another
round after that. I’m going straight to Melbourne now to prepare for the
Australian Open."
