They Have Impressed...
One month into the 2004 season and a number of new and fresh faces have
emerged on the WTA Tour, making major strides in tournaments and in the
WTA Rankings.
Tatiana Golovin is one such player making her way through matches and
opponents. She is currently appearing in her first Tour quarterfinal at
the Open Gaz de France in Paris. This is not the first time in the short
season the 16 year old has seen her name deep in the draw. She began the
year winning three consecutive matches at the Australian Open in only her
second career Grand Slam showing. She defeated three seeds to reach her
first Grand Slam fourth round. The Frenchwoman received wildcards into
both events she has contested this year and has taken full advantage of
the opporunity.
Dinara Safina continues to make headway on the Tour and doesn't seem to
be looking behind. She started the year with an upset over No.5 seed Conchita
Martinez at Gold Coast en route to the quarterfinals. She then recorded her
best Australian Open result and second best Grand Slam result by a third
round finish at the Australian Open, falling to world No.2 Kim Clijsters.
Safina holds an impressive win-loss record of 11-3 leading up to the Open
Gaz de France semifinals, her first Tier II semifinal round.
Croatia's Karolina Sprem has a knack for success at the start of a season.
She won four consecutive ITF events in the first four weeks of the season in
2003 and this year, reached her career third Tour semifinal at Canberra.
Sprem dismissed the No.5 and 6 seeds in Canberra before falling to No.2
seed Suarez in a three set battle. In just one year, Sprem has vaulted 213
spots in the rankings, from No.261 in February 2003 to a current world No.48.
Expect to see more of these impressive rising stars as they continue to
rattle the draws and slide upward in the rankings.
