Mary Pierce: “Happy of my game level”
12 February 2004 - Emmanuel LANGELLIER
Playing a close match against Spanish Magui Serna, Mary Pierce moved through
the quarter finals. After her second win of the event, the French player
seemed to be relaxed. Ready to go on the adventure.
Mary Pierce, second match and second win, how do you feel?
Happy. Now, I am in the quarter finals. I was expecting a hard match and it
was, my opponent played well. I am quite happy of my game level.
Is Playing in Paris, in Coubertin special?
Yes, it helps a lot, especially when the public is there and supports me.
It different from other places.
Did you need this support?
Yes, there are moments you need it and it really helps.
Do you think that you are finding your sensations back and do you think that
it will be hard to defeat you ?
I hope so (laughs)! I hope that I will get better and better. I can feel that
match after match I improve. Tonight, I will relax, have a rest and prepare
the match for tomorrow.
There is a huge poster above the court representing the French team after
their Fed Cup win and you are the only survivor here. Can it impress other
players?
Yes, I saw it. Unfortunately, Amelie (Mauresmo) is injured and she cannot
play. Nathalie (Dechy) as well. That’s true that I am the only one here.
I can feel some pressure because I rally want to play well and the huge
poster can intimidate others… (laughs!)
Do you know Tatiana Golovin?
I know her a bit. She was at the Bollitieri Academy and I was there too. But
in fact, I do not know her very well.
In the semi-finals there might be a full French game.
Why not. I think that the public would like it because it would mean that one
of us will reach the final. (laughs)
Since the beginning of the tournament, there have been several walkovers and
forfeits, how you explain that?
Well, that’s easy: we play too many patches. The new ranking system has
forced us to play more tournament? That’s a lot of stress for our body
and mental conditions. I think that’s too much. Before it was not like
that, we played 16-18 or 20 tournaments at max. Now, some tennis women play
almost 30 tournaments a year.
Does it worry you?
Not at all. We all have the choice. I know myself and I will not play 30
tournament a year.
