Pierce, two sets and match !
13 February 2004 - Sophie DANGER
Mary Pierce ousted Elena Bovina. The French player prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over
the young Russian player after playing 1h19 and six after the 1998 Open,
she reached the semi-finals.
If Elena Bovina could resist to powerful attacks from Jelena Dokic in the
second round in which she played each other, the young Russian player did
not succeed in doing another achievement against Mary Pierce today.
Being ousted 6 games to 3 after 43 minutes of game, the player from Moscow
the tried to reverse the situation in the second round. Being a combative,
determined and winner over Anabel Medina Garrigues, does not allow anything
to pass, then she erased the gap between her and the French player but
without being able to go further and to dominate her opponent.
For her part, Pierce seemed quiet. Being reassured by her nice start with
the wins over Spanish Arantxa Parra and Magui Serna, and satisfied by her
tennis, the French-American player was combative, audacious and she was
supported by her numerous fans, each time she won a point, Her Fed Cup
captain, Guy Forget was also there, in the stands, to support her.
Being under pressure, in the second round, because of Bovina was determined
to come back on the match, Pierce over passed the tempest by giving games but
without being led. The she found back her domination and within 30 minutes
she won the match 6-3, 6-4.
That’s an efficient win for the French player who once again qualified in
two sets for the net round. Six years after her win at the Open Gaz de
France, Pierce reached the semi-finals and she now hopes to move through
the final: “I had a break for a few months and it really helped me, she
explained at the end of the match. I’m happy but I hope that the week is
not over, I hope to go on till the end.”
