Testud Picks Up First Win Since 2002
DOHA, Qatar - In only her second WTA Tour match since becoming a mother,
Sandrine Testud is back in the winner's column on the first day of action
at the Qatar Total Open.
The veteran Frenchwoman, who missed most of 2002 and all of last year
following the birth of her daughter, Isabella, defeated No.8 seed Magui
Serna, 63 62. It was her first match victory since the first round of
Wimbledon two years ago when she defeated Anca Barna in three sets.
Testud's last match of 2002 came at that Wimbledon, losing to Mary Pierce
in the second round, after her and husband Vittorio Magnelli discovered
Sandrine was pregnant with the couple's first child. Isabella was born on
Feb. 19 of the following year and Testud took her time getting back into
competitive play.
She made her first appearance on the WTA Tour in nearly a year and a half
at last month's Open Gaz de France, where she retired in the first round
against Daniela Hantuchova with a left abdominal strain.
The struggles for Serna seemed to continue this week in Doha, dropping her
match record on the year to 4-7. She reached the quarterfinals the first
week of the year in Gold Coast, but has failed to win back-to-back matches
since, losing in the first round at Sydney, the Australian Open, Antwerp and
now Doha, while losing a second round match in Paris and Dubai.
Monday's only other main draw match was cancelled as Hungary's Petra Mandula
was forced to withdraw before her first round clash with Jelena Kostanic due
to a right thigh strain she first suffered last week in Dubai. She was
replaced in the main draw by lucky loser Angelique Widjaja.
The final round of qualifying took place on Monday with Sun Tian Tian, Li
Ting, Roberta Vinci and Stephanie Gehrlein all reaching the main draw.
