Kuerten, Calleri Reach Quarterfinals at Brasil Open
Third seed Gustavo Kuerten played some of his best tennis of the clay court
swing to defeat Frenchman Richard Gasquet 7-6(3), 6-3 and advance to the
quarterfinals of the Brasil Open. Kuerten is hoping to reach his second
final in three weeks, having reached the Vina del Mar final two weeks ago.
Fourth seed Agustin Calleri improved to 8-4 on the season by defeating
Spanish qualifier Fernando Verdasco (pictured) 6-4, 6-4 and advancing to
his first quarterfinal since the first week of the season, when he reached
the Doha semifinals.
Eighth seed Juan Ignacio Chela reached his first quarterfinal of the clay
swing - and the season - when he defeated David Ferrer 6-2, 6-4.
Seventh seed Gaston Gaudio was the only seed to fall on Wednesday, beaten
6-2, 7-6(4) by Galo Blanco.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Calleri: "It was tough since at 2.30 it is very hot. But I know this is for
both. I am playing well and as I said before I hope I can do well in these 2
last tournaments of the Latin American Swing."
Acasuso: "I hope this is going to be my year. Hopefully the injuries will
stay away from me and I will be able to play my tennis and enjoy this great
sport."
Kuerten: "I expected to play better than yesterday and I think I gained
confidence during the match. Until 5-1 in the second I was playing
unbelievable tennis but I lost a bit of concentration there and lost
those two games before closing the match. I am happy to be in quarters
again and to make the step towards a semi-final at home."
Blanco: "I feel recovered from the injury I had the past two weeks. This is
great that I am reaching a quarterfinal again since some time now."
Squillari: "I have played a lot of matches in the past weeks; I think I am
the player with more matches played on clay this year, and this gives me a
lot of confidence. I feel I can win a tournament soon; at least I hope so."
