Guga handles Gasquet and moves on
25/02/2004 - 23h49
At mere 17 years old, Frenchman Richard Gasquet showed during the
first set of his Brasil Open second round match with Gustavo Kuerten
that he's able to compete in such a high level. Too bad it cost him
all his energy. A semifinalist in Buenos Aires last week, the teenager
dropped a long first set in the tiebreaker and, so, ran out of gas. He
struggled with a leg injury suffered in his first round match, got
cramps and eventually fell 7/6 (3) 6/3 to a solid Kuerten, to the
delight of Costa do Sauipe's crowd.
"Gasquet played really well in the first set. My strength came from
the crowd's support. I was very happy with the way I played tonight",
said third-seeded Guga, who now stands at 11-4 in 2004. "Of course you
can't talk enough about how tremendous a players Guga is, but I was
really tired. It was a close game in the beginning, but he served
really well in the end of the first. It was difficult to react in the
second, for fatigue has really influenced", explained 85th-ranked Gasquet.
