Clement Shines on Home Soil; Rosset Upends Coria
Fourth seeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus defeated hometown favourite and wild card e
ntrant Cyril Saulnier, 6-4, 6-4, in second round action at Marseille. This was
the pair’s first meeting following Saulnier’s victory over Mirnyi in 2003 on
grass at Queens. Marseille’s highest seeded player remaining in the singles dr
aw, Mirnyi, improves his 2004 singles record to 8-3 and will meet Slovak Domini
k Hrbaty in the quarterfinals.
Following Frenchman Gregory Carraz’s stunning upset of first seed Juan Carlos
Ferrero, Swede Robin Soderling uprooted Carraz, 6-3, 6-4. Soderling had 20 aces
against the Swede, including 11 in the first 16 points he served. Soderling re
aches his first quarterfinal of the year and improves his 2004 record to 4-4. H
eading into the second round match, Soderling maintains an INDESIT ATP 2004 Rac
e position of 78.
Slovak Dominik Hrbaty improved his 2004 singles record to 14-2 after ousting si
xth seed Spaniard Albert Costa, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5) in second round action. Hrbaty
has had a stellar start to his 2004 season putting him in the seventh position
in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race. He won tournament championships in Adelaide and
Auckland.
Second seed Guillermo Coria fell Thursday to Swiss qualifier Marc Rosset, 7-6(2
), 6-1, in Rosset’s first victory over a Top 10 player since May 2000 when he
defeated No. 9 Nicolas Lapentti in the first round of ATP Masters Series Hambur
g. Rosset’s last win over a Top 5 ranked opponent came over No. 3 Yevgeny Kafe
lnikov in the final of London in Feb. 2000. The Swiss turned pro twelve years b
efore Coria (2000) and this was their first meeting in an ATP or Grand Slam eve
nt. Rosset meets Swede Jonas Bjorkman, who is coming off a tough fought victory
with eighth seed Marat Safin, in the quarters.
Fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez ousted Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 6-3, improv
ing his record to 3-0 versus the Finn. Gonzalez moves to 8-3 on the year and lo
oks to reach his second final of the year, following his win at Vina del Mar.
Swede Jonas Bjorkman reaches his second quarterfinal of the year with his 1 hou
r 30 minute defeat of eighth seed and wild card entrant, Marat Safin, 7-6(5), 7
-5. Bjorkman was impressive, winning 33 of 35 first serve points. The Swede did
not face a single breakpoint, loosing only nine total points on his serve the
entire match. Although the Safin holds a 4-3 lifetime edge over Bjorkman, the S
wede has taken the pair’s last three meetings.
In the pair’s first meeting, Spaniard Alberto Martin upended Sargis Sargsian 6
-3, 6-3 to reach his second quarterfinal of 2004, while Arnaud Clement delighte
d the French crowd with a straight set win over Olivier Rochus. Including his w
in in Metz last year and his run to the final in Lyon, Clement is now 11-1 in h
is past three tournaments on French soil.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Gonzalez: "It's been no doubt the best match indoors for me this year, I served
well, returned well, went to the net to cut the rallies short and put pressure
on him."
On playing Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals
"I don't know him (Soderling) that well, we have practiced a few times together
. He hits the ball hard and serves well. If I play like I did today I should
win but every match is different and in the quarterfinals all matches are tough
."
Coria: "It was a difficult match against Rosset, he serves very hard, very well
, he had a very high percentage of first serves in. It is very difficult to
play against someone that serves so well. In the tiebreak I had no chances and
in the second set I felt a little bit tired. I'm happy because I won a tough
match against Davydenko last night but also disappointed because I have to
depart early from the tournament and I would have really loved to win this
tournament."
Rosset: "It's a win that is very pleasing, it is good for my confidence. It's
been a long time that I haven't played a match like this. I don't think he had
the best prepararion coming from clay but it doesn't take anything anway from
my victory. If I compare the level of my game today with the first round in
qualifying against Viloca Saturday night, I have improved so mush in very
little time so I am very satisfied."
Mirnyi: "I feel much more positive about my game than yesterday's match.
Yesterday was a sort of a battle that I was lucky to come away with a win
but today I felt it was pretty good quality tennis."
Soderling: “I think this was a very good match for me. I served very well at
the beginning and that really helped to put more pressure and be a little bit
more aggressive on his service games. I also returned very well today. It is
just a great feeling. I always play well in France since I played my first
tournament here when I was 13 or 14. I like this country, it is fun to play
tennis here."
Safin: "I think he had one of his best matches today as far as I can remember.
He hit all the letcords in the tiebreak and in the last game of the second set
, he touched the net and it was 0-40 on my serve. He played very well today,
I did not play bad but if the luck had been on my side, it would have been the
same score but the other way."
Bjorkman: "I played very good, I served very well and really placed my volleys
perfectly today. He always was under pressure which was good. I lost four
times against him and now have beaten him three times, I have finally started
to learn a little bit how to beat him. I think I got a good game, tactically
I played it pretty good today. I mixed up the pace, changed the pace and
position of my serve. if you let Marat control the points, he's very tough to
beat."
Clement: "It was a very tough match from a physical point of view. I was very
happy with my game today. It's a good opportunity for me this week, some of
the top players have lost but they have lost to good players."
FRIDAY MATCHES
Two players with a combined record of 22-5 on the year meet in the day's openin
g quarterfinal. Dominik Hrbaty, who won two titles to start the year and fourth
-seeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus square off. The two last played at the 2002 US Op
en, with Mirnyi defeating the Slovak in four sets, but the last time they met i
ndoors in France, Hrbaty prevailed.
Another player with a title on the year is Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, who won i
n Vina del Mar to capture his fourth ATP crown. He is still looking for his fir
st title on a surface other than clay and he'll have a tough battle with up-and
-coming Swedish stand-out Robin Soderling. Soderling can look to his compatriot
Joachim Johansson, who won the indoor title in Memphis last weekend, as a sign
that Swedish tennis is back on the move. Soderling reached the final in Stockh
olm last year and is playing in his first ATP quarterfinal of 2004.
Albert Martin will meet home country favorite Arnaud Clement of France. Clement
, who won the title in Metz last September and reached the final in Lyon is loo
king to continue his success at French tournaments. The Spaniard and Frenchmanꄊ存 last meeting occurred in 2001. Clement holds a 2-1 record over Martin, but t
hey have not played indoors.
A pair of veterans square off in the night match. 33-year-old Marc Rosset holds
a 2-0 lifetime record versus the 31-year-old Swede, Jonas Bjorkman, who was a
finalist here a year ago. But the two haven't played in seven years and their f
irst match against each other was 11 years ago. The combined ages of the two wi
ll be 64.
