First Round Underway in Stuttgart
Rising French star Paul-Henri Mathieu wasted no time in dispatching
qualifier Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2. After enjoying a
breakthrough year in 2002, where he won titles in Moscow and Lyon,
Mathieu has struggled to maintain that momentum in 2003. He has not
advanced past the second round at any ATP event all year, but hopes
to break out of his slump on the clay in Stuttgart.
TUESDAY MATCHES
One of the ATP's most talented clay court players, No. 2 seed Argentine
Guillermo Coria, returns to his favorite surface on Tuesday, meeting young
Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round. Coria boasts an outstanding
23-5 record on clay this year. The Argentine won his biggest title at the
Tennis Masters Series event in Hamburg, defeating countryman Agustin Calleri
in the final. He also reached the semifinals at Roland Garros (l to Verkerk)
and the final at another Tennis Masters Series event in Monte-Carlo, falling
to Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Also on Tuesday's lineup will be rising Russian Nikolay Davydenko, the
No. 14 seed. Davydenko has already captured two titles this year in
Adelaide and Estoril. He also reached the final in St. Poelten, losing
to Andy Roddick in the final. He will face the Frenchman Olivier Mutis
in another first meetings.
