Coria, Nadal Fire Through, Costa Falls
No. 2 seed Guillermo Coria of Argentina defeated Frenchman Paul-Henri
Mathieu 7-5, 6-3. The two 21-year-olds, whose dates of birth are only
one day apart, played each other frequently in juniors and know each
other's games well. But Coria proved he's now the dominant player on
clay. The young Argentine is in the midst of a breakthrough year, winning
the Tennis Masters Series event in Hamburg, reaching the final in Monte-Carlo
and Buenos Aires and the semifinals at Roland Garros.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Coria: "I've been playing Mathieu since we were young and in the juniors,
so we know each other well. It was a really tough match and I'm glad to
have pulled it out."
"It's not usual to have this kind of heat in Germany, but it's OK, I am
used to it."
About the tournament fans
"The fans were good out there, and I'm glad there were people cheering
for me, as well as Mathieu. It made for a good atmosphere out there on
Centre."
