No. 4 seed Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean also was an upset victim,
falling to Italian Filippo Volandri 6-2, 6-1. Grosjean was coming
off a semifinal run at Wimbledon, but appeared to have trouble
adjusting to the slower clay courts.
Volandri: “Last time I played him in Hamburg, I was just coming from
Rome and I had played a lot of matches. I played a lot better today.
I’ve been playing a lot these past few weeks also, but I am more
focused and physically I feel better… more fit.”
About the heat
“I just came back from Bastad, so I wasn’t really expecting it to be
so hot. But it’s OK.”
