Meanwhile, third seed Rainer Schuettler was another second round casualty
on day two, going down in three sets against Paul-Henri Mathieu. Schuettler,
the Australian Open runner-up who received a bye in the first round, had lost
just once in an opening match all year and had reached at least the
quarterfinals in nine tournaments.
Mathieu, who had a 3-12 record this year before arriving in Kitzbuhel, will
now meet Feliciano Lopez, the No. 13 seed who brought the ATP tournament
debut of Florin Mergea, the Wimbledon Junior champion, to an end with a 6-3,
6-4 victory.
