Not so lucky were No. 2 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu, No. 3 Arnaud Clement
and No. 5 Olivier Rochus, who each joined No. 6 Fernando Vicente and
No. 8 Andre Sa as first round departures. No. 7 seed Sargis Sargsian
also exited the tournament after he was forced to miss his match due to
travel problems.
Mathieu, who made his 2003 debut in Miami with a first round loss to
Hyung-Taik Lee, was playing in only his second match since last November's
Davis Cup final because of injuries and was not able to overcome France's
Jean-Rene Lisnard.
Clement rallied to win the second set against Fernando Meligeni, but the
veteran Brazilian held his own in the third set and walked away with the
three-set victory. Clement had only two hours of practice on clay and a
half hour of warm up today after coming from the Davis Cup tie - that was
played on indoor hard courts - in Toulouse.
France's Eric Prodon won his first ATP match on Tuesday when he defeated
lucky loser Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, 7-6(5), 6-2. Prodon, who was 0-3 in ATP
matches prior to Tuesday, had also defeated Ramirez Hidalgo the day before
during the final round of qualifying. Ramirez Hidalgo replaced Sargsian in
the draw.
Julien Boutter won his first ATP match since last year's Stuttgart event
when he defeated Davide Sanguinetti in straight sets.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Mathieu: "It's been hard after being out for four months with the injury.
Last year, I played qualifying here and reached the quarters and I was
hoping to play here like I was playing at the end of last season, but
it's been tough coming back. He also played well."
Clement: "There were a lot of good things from the match today. I didn't
have a lot of time on the clay after this weekend.
"In the beginning of the third, I wasn't moving my legs. I was trying to win
points without moving and that was a mistake. It was a little better at the
end of the third set, but by then it was too late.
