El Aynaoui Wins Battle of Moroccans
He now meets Julien Boutter in the final.
In front of a jam-packed, enthusiastic Moroccan crowd that cheered and
chanted for both players during and after almost every point, Younes
El Aynaoui defeated his good friend Hicham Arazi in three sets in the
semifinals at the Grand Prix Hassan II on Saturday. And just to show
what good friends and sportsmen these two men are, they both went for
a jog together after their emotional, roller-coaster match.
El Aynaoui comfortably took a one-set lead but began to look tired in the
second set as Arazi took the initiative and pushed the match to a third
set. It was El Aynaoui's fourth consecutive three setter this week and the
momentum shifted for a short time.
But El Aynaoui went up a break early and the crowd, urging both players
on, revelled in the intense action. At one point, Arazi, tired of waiting
for the boisterous crowd to quiet down before a point simply sat down in
an umpire's chair and waited. El Aynaoui dug deep in the third and though
his serve lacked the usual zip, and his inside-out forehand was not as
crushing as it has been in other matches, he found a way to pull out
the match.
The defending champion has now won nine consecutive matches in Casablanca
including seven three-setters during the past two years. El Aynaoui is
looking to become the first repeat champion at this event since Argentine
clay court specialist Guillermo Perez-Roldan won back-to-back titles
here in 1992 and 1993.
In the opening semifinal of the day, Julien Boutter of France came back
from down a break in both sets to defeat Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty.
Hrbaty opened the match by breaking Boutter's serve but the Frenchmen,
whose nail was coming off on his right toe, broke back twice later in the
set and took advantage of several errors on Hrbaty's forehand side to
jump out to a one-set lead.
In the second set, Hrbaty was in control 4-1 when Boutter twisted his
ankle slightly. Knowing that his ankle was a bit tender, Boutter played
a more attacking style of tennis and reeled off five straight games to
win 6-3, 6-4 and reach his second ATP final. His first was more than two
years ago at the Breil ATP Milano Indoors in February 2001, when he lost
to Roger Federer.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
BOUTTER: "I'm not really sure how I won that match. I was already
playing with the nail on my toe coming off, so I knew I had to end the
points a little quicker. Then when I twisted the ankle, I decided to
change my tactics a bit and play more aggressively. I'm proud that I
changed my tactics and came back to win. I stayed calm and relaxed. It's
probably only the second time in my life where I won a match by using
tactics."
"It will be more like a Davis Cup match tomorrow then the final of a
Grand Prix and I'm going to be thrown into that arena with the Moroccan
crowd."
"I'll have to have a helmet on to block out all the noise, but normally I
don't pay attention to the crowd." ^^
"I don't have a preference in who I play, I've beaten both of them before,
they are both good players and both have great games."
"Everytime I come to Morocco I always buy stuff, rugs, lamps and make a
few trips to the market."
EL AYNAOUI: "It was a tough match, the crowd was really loud and sometimes
made it hard. I'm great friends with Hicham and we talked after the match
and we even went jogging together to warm down."
"It will be a difficult match against Boutter tomorrow, all my matches
have been three setters and I'm tired, but I'm definitely going in with a
lot of confidence ."
(about being tired for Monte Carlo and clay court season)
"I'd rather go into that tournmant with wins under my belt than not
playing, so I don't think all these matches will be a problem."
SUNDAY FINAL
Sunday's final features Moroccan hero Younes El Aynaoui facing resurgent
Frenchmen Julien Boutter. Boutter had not won an ATP match in nine months
since his first round win in Stuttgart last year, but now finds himself
in his second career ATP final - his only previous final appearance coming
in Milan in 2001. Boutter likes playing in Morocco. He is 7-1 here the past
two years and reached the semifinals last year, losing to Guillermo Canas.
His hard-serving and aggressive game is complemented by a one-handed
backhand that is effective on the clay with both its slice and kicking
topspin.
But he will have a raucous Moroccan crowd rooting against him and Boutter
admitted it will be a gladiator-type atmosphere, when he pointed out that
he will be going into a battle "arena" with more of a charged Davis Cup
atmosphere than a Grand Prix final. By reaching the final, Boutter is
likely to move into the top 100 from his position at No. 102 when the
new rankings come out on Monday.
El Aynaoui goes into the final 9-0 at this event the past two years with
his last loss coming to Tommy Robredo in 2001 in three sets, 9-7 in the
third set tiebreak. A win by El Aynaoui would move him up a spot to eighth
in the ATP Champions Race 2003. The two have played twice on clay court
with El Aynaoui winning both times. Earlier this year, El Aynaoui defeated
Boutter in the first round of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in straight sets.
