Boutter, playing in his second career final (l. to Federer, Milan 2001), broke El Aynaoui in the first game of the third set en route to becoming the first Frenchman to capture an ATP title this season. Boutter, 29, reached the final - watched by more than 5,500 fans - with wins over Sanguinetti, Horna, Saretta and Hrbaty. El Aynaoui defeated Montanes, Norman, Massu and Arazi - all in three sets - en route to the final. El Aynaoui is now 5-11 in ATP finals with his last ATP tournament win coming in Munich last April. The 31-year-old moves to eighth position in the ATP Champions Race. What the Players Said Boutter: "I knew that Younes had four tough matches before this final, as well as Davis Cup. Physically, I don't think he was at his peak fitness; that's what I was telling myself during the match. I was happy that I was leading from the start; it helped keep the atmosphere from getting out of control. It was the only way to keep the crowd quiet from the beginning. "If you told me at the beginning of the week that I would finish by playing Younes El Aynaoui in the final, in front of the crowd, in a tough match, with good tactics that I played this week, I would not have believed it." El Aynaoui: "It was a difficult match for both of us. It wasn't fantastic or relaxed tennis out there, mostly because of the conditions. At the start, and throughout most of the first set I was having trouble with the toss on my serve with the wind. I had never seen it like that before. "Even after all those long matches, physically, I was fine - as I said the wind really disturbed me. I will definitely be back next year." 2003 FIRST TIME ATP WINNERS With Boutter's victory today, there have been seven first-time winners on the ATP circuit in 2003.
