No. 2 seed and two-time defending champion Andy Roddick rallied to beat
Frenchman Olivier Mutis 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to remain undefeated (16-0) in
his career in Houston in the semifinals at the US Men's Clay Court
Championships.
Roddick was broken in the ninth game of the opening set, but then he
jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set before cruising along. The
American also grabbed an early break in the final set to go up 2-1 and
added another break in the seventh game. Roddick felt the hot conditions
began to wear on Mutis.
Olivier Mutis: "I played really good tennis in the first set and I
didn't have much energy after the first set. I don't know why I was so
tired but it was really hot today. I know his first serve is so big but
his second serve was hard to return and it has an unbelievable kick."
"I'm happy with the way I played this week and this will give me more
confidence and preparation for Roland Garros. It's the most important
tournament for French players and I want to do well."
