Dupuis Fights Off Corretja
Hrbaty and Hipfl also advance.
Frenchman Anthony Dupuis stunned Alex Corretja 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 on the opening
day of play at the CAM Open Comunidad Valenciana. Corretja, the No. 3 seed,
had accepted a wild card into the event, hoping to get his game into gear on
clay. But the Spaniard said he felt uncomfortable on court, and Dupuis took
full advantage of his mistakes.
No. 7 seed Jose Acasuso of Argentina also fell in the first round, losing to
Austria's Markus Hipfl 6-4, 7-6(7) in a tightly contested match. It was Hipfl's
first win since he had surgery on his rotator cuff last August.
In another match, Dominik Hrbaty earned a satisfying three-set win over Magnus
Norman. Hrbaty now meets either russian Igor Kunitsyn or Argentine Agustin
Calleri in the second round.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Hrbaty: "It is always interesting to play Magnus (Norman). He's a fighter.
You have to play your best to beat him. He plays long rallies from the
baseline and on clay, it makes for a great match to watch. The match was
very close. It could have gone either way. I had two lucky bounces on his
last service game."
Vicente: "We were out there a long time, but the points were very quick. I
had some lucky points in the first set tie-break. Feliciano (Lopez) soon
managed to break my serve in the second set and I wasn't able to break back.
In the third set, I took the momentum of the match to take the victory."
"Feliciano has a very strong serve and tended to win his service games
quickly. There wasn't the typical clay court rallies in the match today.
The Centre Court is dry so it plays fast and the balls are fast here too."
"As a local player, I am delighted to have an ATP tournament here in Valencia.
A lot of people from my village came and watched my match today." 原來是本地人
On his next opponent
"I will play Corretja or Dupuis in the second round. At this level, all
the matches are going to be tough."
Hipfl: "It was a perfect match for me. It was my first win since my
surgery nine months ago. I made my comeback in March. Although I was playing
well last week, I couldn't finish the match."
"It is important to know that I can beat a good player like Acasuso again.
I hope I won't be as nervous in the second round. I have experienced the
difficulties of coming back from injury two years ago from similar surgery
and I hope this time it won't take me as long to find my level of tennis again.
My ranking has slipped, but if I have a good week here, it should set me up
well."
Sargsian: "I was expecting a tougher match against Ferrer with a lot
of long rallies, but the courts are very fast here. I was serving unbelievably
well and had a lot of service winners."
"I think I am hitting the ball really well. I am just missing a little bit of
match practice."
"It has been almost a year since I came back from my hip surgery. I was having
to take pain killers every match with the constant pain I was feeling. I
thought I was going to have to take them for the rest of my career, but then
I took an entire month off in November and when I came back, I was absolutely
pain free. I feel in great form now."
Norman: "It hasn't gone my way in the last two weeks. I played against
Calleri last week in Barcelona. It was another high level match. He went on
to the semifinals. Today, I think I could have won the first set and I could
have also won the third set easily. He had a lot of confidence having played
well in Barcelona."
"Had we met in the quarterfinals, where I would have had two match wins under
my belt, I think I could have won those deciding points of the match which
handed him the victory today."
"I can't let this get my head down. You have to take the positives from each
week. Unfortunately, I have lost in the first round two times in a row now.
I thought I played well today, but it is so frustrating because I know I can
play so much better."
Corretja: "It was a desperate loss for me. It has hit me hard and it
hurts because I came to Valencia to play a lot of matches and find my rhythm."
"It was a very uncomfortable match for me. He took a lot of risks and fought
hard at the end. Each error I committed proved very costly."
"It's difficult to comment on this match now. It hasn't been a good week for
me. From here, I will go back to Barcelona to practice. I will be searching
for the feeling I used to have on court that I can't find right now. I need
to find my game again."
