Novak and Clement Reach Ordina Open Quarterfinals
The Czech advanced to his fourth quarterfinal of the
year by defeating Olivier Mutis.
Top-seed and wild card Jiri Novak reached his fourth
quarterfinal of the season by scoring a 6-2, 6-4 win over
Frenchman Olivier Mutis at the Ordina Open in
's-Hertogenbosch Thursday. The 28-year-old Czech
started the year by reaching the final in Dubai and he was
also on the runner-up team at the ARAG ATP World
Team Championship in D榊seldorf last month.
On Friday Novak meets countryman Jan Vacek who
ousted fifth-seed Sebastien Grosjean 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Before
coming to 's-Hertogenbosch the 27-year-old Czech had
only won one match on the ATP circuit this year, against
Goran Ivanisevic in London last week. Last year the Prague
resident made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon, his
career-best Grand Slam performance.
The runner-up of the 2002 edition of the Ordina Open,
Arnaud Clement, booked a spot among the last eight by
defeating Dutchman Dennis Van Scheppingen 7-6(4), 6-7(5),
6-3. In the quarterfinals the No. 7 seeded Frenchman faces
Spain's Fernando Vicente who came back from being a set
down to defeat Lars Burgsmuller 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Van Scheppingen: "I had a lot of chances. In the first I was
two breaks up, then you have to win the set. There were a
lot of rain breaks in the second set but I managed to win it.
I think I had good chances in the third set but he played a
good return game at 4-3. That was the key to the match."
Clement: "He was playing really well, he was returning
unbelievable. I played well, if I hadn't played that well I
could have lost in straight sets. It was a tough match and
I played really well especially at the end."
About Vicente
"He has really good hands, for sure it's not going to be easy,
it's a quarterfinal."
Vicente: "I'm very happy. I was 6-0, 3-0 down in my first
match and now I am in my first quarterfinal on grass. It was
very close in the third set but I didn't do any mistakes."
About Clement
"Normally he is the favorite but you never know. I will give
my best and we will see."
FRIDAY MATCHES
Third-seed and defending champion Sjeng Schalken meets
No. 6 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain for a spot among the
final four. The two have played against each other twice
before at the Ordina Open. In 2001 Robredo ousted Schalken
in the quarterfinals and last year the Dutchman scored a
semifinal win over the Dutchman. 26-year-old Schalken has
now reached the quarterfinals or better in five (1997, 1998,
2001, 2002 & 2003) of his ten appearances in 's-Hertogenbosch.
This is his fourth quarterfinals of 2003 following Rotterdam (l. to
Roger Federer), Dubai (l. to Jiri Novak) and Munich (l. to
Yevgeny Kafelnikov).
21-year-old Robredo reached the semifinals in his two previous
appearances at the Ordina Open in 2001 and 2002. His best
efforts of the season came in Dubai and Estoril where he advanced
to the semifinals. He also reached his first quarterfinal of a Grand
Slam at Roland Garros, where he defeated Lleyton Hewitt and
Gustavo Kuerten before falling to Albert Costa.
Raemon Sluiter faces countryman John van Lottum for the second
time in their careers. Sluiter is in the Ordina Open quarterfinals for
the second time in seven appearances. The Dutchman advanced to
his career-second ATP final in Rotterdam in February (l. to Max
Mirnyi) and the week before he was in the Marseille quarterfinals
(l. to Roger Federer).
Van Lottum competes here for the fifth consecutive year and
this marks the first time he makes it past the second round.
This is his first quarterfinal since reaching the semifinals in Amersfoort
last year (l. to Juan Ignacio Chela).
Seventh-seed Arnaud Clement takes on Spain's Fernando Vicente.
Clement lost his opening round match against Xavier Malisse when
he made his 's-Hertogenbosch debut in 2001 and last year he
reached the final where he lost to Schalken. His best 2003 result is
a semifinal in Halle last week (l. to Nicolas Kiefer).
Vicente who plays here for the first time made it to the semifinals in
Valencia (l. to Christophe Rochus) and was among the final eight in
Doha (l. to Mikhail Youzhny).
Top-seed Jiri Novak meets fellow Czech Jan Vacek. Both players
are playing in the Ordina Open for the first time. Novak lost to
Roger Federer in the Dubai final in February and also has quarterfinals
appearances in Auckland and Halle. Vacek plays in his first quarterfinal
since Sopot in July last year (l. to Jose Acasuso).
