Schalken Wins Eighth Career Title
Schalken now 8-3 in ATP finals.
Sjeng Schalken repeated last year's feat by capturing his second straight
title at The Ordina Open in 's-Hertogenbosch. The Dutch No.1 captured his
eighth career ATP title, and his first of 2003, with a 6-3, 6-4 win over
Frenchman Arnaud Clement.
Schalken defended his title in 's-Hertogenbosch from last year without
dropping a set all week and won the title in 1 hour, 37 minutes. The
Dutchman played in his 11th career final and the win was his second
championship win on grass.
The Dutchman has now won at least one ATP title five straight years and
eight of the last nine. Since making his tour breakthrough in 1995,
Schalken has won a title every year except 1998.
Schalken broke Clement's serve twice in each set, losing his own serve
only once in the match, in the second set. Schalken's service game was
led by a 70 percent first serve percentage.
En route to the title, Schalken defeated Albert Portas, Christophe Rochus,
No. 6 seed Tommy Robredo, Raemon Sluiter before his straight sets
triumph against Clement.
The Dutchman earned 35 ATP Champions Race points for his win, while
Clement collected 24 points. Schalken has an impressive 18-3 record
on grass the last two years.
Clement was aiming for his second career title on the ATP circuit and
played in his fifth career final. The Frenchman had defeated Fred
Hemmes Jr. and Dennis Van Scheppingen, Fernando Vicente and
Jan Vacek en route to the final.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Schalken: "It couldn't be better. I was very happy with the semifinals and
I'm very happy with the final. Arnaud is a very good grass court player. I'm
happy to beat him in two sets. It's also a big confidence boost not having
lost a set all week."
"I feel very much at home at this tournament. It's a tournament in the south
of Holland and I'm from the south. I'm very happy to win here."
About Wimbledon: "It will be a mental test tomorrow. I have to play without
practice on the Wimbledon grass. It's going to be a mental game against
Parmar. I have to be prepared to lose the first set or two, but he will feel
the heat."
Clement: "The first set was ok, he was just playing a little bit better than
me and that was enough to win. He did fewer mistakes than I did and he
was a little bit more consistent than me. Sjeng played on top level today.
He is a very, very nice guy."
"During a few games today I played my best tennis of the week. My
confidence has improved this week."
"It's the second time in a row that I've reached the final. I hope I will be
back in the final next year and finally win. It's a great tournament."
About Wimbledon: "It will be a tough match against Ginepri. It's tough,
the transition to Wimbledon is very short, you're not really into the tournament.
Last year was the same, I played the final here on Sunday as well. I knew
it will be tough tomorrow, If I'm lucky it will rain…"
