Costa Tumbles, Federer Cruises
==Second seed Albert Costa fell to Swede Andreas Vinciguerra.==
[節錄]
On the first day of the new year, No. 2 seed Albert Costa succumbed
to Swedish qualifier Andreas Vinciguerra, who secured a berth in the
quarterfinals at Doha with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 victory. Costa was 5-4
up in the third set, when Vinciguerra came back to win the last three
games of the match. Vinciguerra, who was out with a hand and lower
back injury for seven months last year, now meets Stefan Koubek of Austria.
Top seed Roger Federer, however, kept himself in the running for the
Doha title, defeating fellow Swiss Michel Kratochvil 6-4, 6-4. Also on
Wednesday, defending champion Younes El Aynaoui came through in yet
another battle of countrymen, dismissing fellow Moroccan Hicham Arazi
6-4, 7-6(1). And France's Fabrice Santoro saved four match points in his
match with Christophe Rochus, winning 7-5, 6-7(8), 7-5. Rochus was 5-1
up in the third set, when Santoro stormed back to win six consecutive
games.
THURSDAY'S PREVIEW
Younes El Aynaoui is now three matches away from claiming the Doha
title for the second consecutive year, but he next faces the tricky,
spinmaster Fabrice Santoro in the quarterfinals. With his unconventional
two-fisted groundstrokes, the Frenchman has toppled some of the game's
best players. And after saving four match points in his second-round
match, Santoro is brimming with assurance. Santoro and El Aynaoui have
met six times before, with both players claiming three matches. The last
time they met, last year in Hamburg, the Moroccan walked away a straight
sets winner.
Top seed Roger Federer, meanwhile, will square off against American
Jan-Michael Gambill. Federer has won all three previous meetings against
Gambill, but the American plays his best tennis on hard courts and is
intent on getting off to a positive start in 2003, having struggled with
mixed results in the previous season.
Kids Clinics in Doha
Several Kids Clinics were arranged at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2003
in Doha, Qatar. ATP Players Albert Costa, Fabrice Santoro, Martin Damm
and Cyril Suk gave some local Qatari youngsters a chance to hit some
balls with their idols.
