OPEN 13 - MARSEILLE Feb. 15, 2003 [節錄] Federer Marches on in Marseille No. 1 seed Roger Federer marched into the final of the OPEN 13 on Saturday at the Palais des Sports de Marseille. Federer dispatched a hot Karol Kucera in straight sets, ending Kucera's eight match winning streak that included a victory at a Challenger in Poland last week. Though Kucera pushed Federer to a first-set tiebreak, the Swiss star's all-court game was too much for Kucera, who had upset local favorite Sebastien Grosjean earlier in the week. In the day's other contest, and much to the disappointment of the French crowd here in Marseille, Nicolas Escude was unable to play his match withdrawing from the semifinals with a strained right hamstring. Escude noted that while his injury was not severe, he did not want to risk any serious injury that would keep him out of competition for longer periods of time. As a true local star, Escude went on to the court and addressed the crowd before his scheduled match with Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman to explain his unfortunate circumstances. Bjorkman then spoke with the fans over the microphone as well before entertaining everyone in the stadium by hitting and playing with young players. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Nicolas Escude: "It was not a major injury, but it was a strain. I didn't think I could be 100% and I just didn't want to aggravate the injury." "I made the decision because I've experienced this before. At Wimbledon last year, I was injured and couldn't play for three months." "I'm still planning on going to Rotterdam, it is deceiving because I felt great and I was playing great. The only positive thing is that I didn't lose here at all this week." Jonas Bjorkman: "Of course you always want to win by playing but situations like this are going to happen. It's sort of a different experience for me because it's the first time it has happened this late in the tournament to me. But given the fact that I've played so many matches in the past week, it was a lucky break." FINAL PREVIEW In the doubles final, Fabrice Santoro will be looking for his 11th consecutive doubles victory having won at the Australian Open with partner Michael Llodra and winning his Davis Cup doubles match before his showing this week with partner Sebastien Grosjean. They play the Czech team of Tomas Cibulec and Pavel Vizner who received a walkover on Saturday when Nicolas Escude withdrew. -- Life is a compromise anyway. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 218.187.34.128
