Escude withdraws

Frenchman Nicolas Escude was forced to withdraw from his Marseille
Open semi-final against Swede Jonas Bjorkman through injury on Saturday
and put the blame on being overworked in the Davis Cup.

Escude collected a thigh injury during his quarter-final victory over
compatriot Rodolphe Cadart on Friday and decided to pull out.

The Frenchman, who will undergo medical examinations next week, said he
was feeling a pain in the thigh and blamed the Davis Cup's demanding
preparation for his injury.

He has called for a meeting with the team chiefs to discuss his concerns.

France beat Romania 4-1 in Bucharest last weekend to qualify for the
quarter-finals of the world team's event.

"I'm happy to play in the Davis Cup but I don't want it to spoil my
personal career," Escude said. "We talked about it with the others guys
and we will have to review the situation to avoid such mishaps in
the future.

"I think there is something wrong with the preparation for the Davis
Cup. We were totally ready on the D-Day and we won. But if it sidelines
you for the next three weeks, it's not worth it."

Escude said he has discussed the matter with his French team mates
Sebastien Grosjean and Fabrice Santoro and blamed France's coach
Guy Forget for some of the problem.

"Guy has done a great job over the years but he has thought too much
about the Cup itself and not enough about the players.

"We were trapped in a vicious circle of the victory. We pretended not
to notice this situation but now I'm really fed up with it." 

France won the Davis Cup in 2001 and reached the final last year,
losing 3-2 to Russia in Paris.

"It's normal for the players to be worried about their physical shape.
We must hold a meeting with the staff of the French team to make sure
we can be heard."
