Although Farbice Santoro is through to the next round, he had his work
cut out for him today. As was the case during their previous four
encounters - of which they have won two apiece - Andrei Pavel refused
to throw in the towel and forced the match into a third set. He nevertheless
lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. "Andrei put up a fierce fight and turned it into a
tough match. It could have gone either way" said the 30-year old Frenchman
afterwards.
Santoro left Ahoy’ in a flurry of anger last year, after several bad calls
caused him to lose to Tim Henman. "So much has happened since, that I had
almost forgotten the incident. I have won enough prices since. It is a shame
that the Davis Cup wasn’t one of them. We were only two points from victory
against Russia. Hopefully we will get the chance to play again."
The Frenchman considered giving up his place in the French Davis Cup team
last year: "I wanted to give the up-and-coming generation a chance, but it
seems as though my services are still needed. I have always enjoyed playing
Davis Cup tennis. We have a strong and well-matched team."
Unlike Nicolas Escude, Santoro suffered no injuries during his Davis Cup
match: "It is not difficult to sustain an injury and it could happen at
any time. Nicolas has benefited a lot from playing Davis Cup tennis, so
I don’t really see why he should complain about an injury."
