Nicolas Escud continued his string of victories earlier this evening. Following
an exciting match against Richard Krajicek, the Frenchman booked his twelfth
consecutive win here in Rotterdam: 6-3 6-7 (1) 7-6 (4). It was also the last
appearance of future Tournament Director Krajicek. "When I left court, I took
some time to say goodbye to the crowd. It was a good match that allowed me to
stop on a positive note."
Escud reigned supreme during the first set. He played some outstanding returns
and made life difficult for Krajicek. The Dutchman lost his service at 4-3,
enabling Escud to take the set. Following an early service break in the second
set, it seemed as though Krajicek was headed for a quick defeat. However, the
Dutchman made a strong comeback at 5-4, breaking the defending champion's serve
and comfortably winning the tie-break 7-1.
"I was tired and my service was not going according to plan" the Frenchman
commented afterwards. "Richard played some great winners at the end of the
second set." The Frenchman again proved the stronger player in the third set.
Having established a 4-2 lead, he immediately lost his service, allowing
Krajicek back into the match. Again the set was decided in a tie-break. Escud
led 5-1 when Krajicek launched another offensive, returning the score to 5-4.
Although he had the opportunity to take control on his own serve, a failed
return and his tenth double fault sealed his fate (7-4).
Escud will play fellow countryman Sebastien Grosjean in the quarter-finals.
"I managed to survive a match point during last year's match, but it will be a
tough contest."
Escud beats two-time champion Richard Krajicek.
