The long-awaited comeback of Goran Ivanisevic ended in disaster on Monday when
he injured his right knee during his opening match at the Dubai Tennis
Championships.
The popular Croat, who won the tournament in 1996, had not played an ATP Tour
match since March. He underwent surgery to his left shoulder in May, and made
a tentative comeback at a small tournament in Germany last month before winning
a Davis Cup doubles match against the United States.
Playing Russian qualifier Andrei Stoliarov, he slipped with his opponent
leading 6-5 but down 15-40 in the first set. Ivanisevic received treatment,
levelled at 6-6, but then collapsed after losing the first point of the
tiebreak.
Although clearly distressed about his knee, the 31-year old was satisfied with
the way his shoulder held up.
"The shoulder was hurting, but I was happy with the way I served, happy the way
I played," he said. "Was a really good match for me. I did some double-faults,
but that's normal for me. I hit the ball very clean."
Fabrice Santoro began the defence of his title by defeating Stefan Koubek 6-7
(1-7) 6-2 6-0. He made a bright start, breaking to lead 2-0 and then holding
three points for a 4-0 lead. But Koubek began to find his range, recovered
the break, and then dominated the tiebreak.
But from then on it was one-way traffic as Koubek either went for winners at
the wrong time or was simply careless. Santoro broke serve in the second set
to lead 3-2, and when play resumed after a rain break he didn't drop another
game.
Younes El Aynaoui, who finished a runner-up to Santoro last year, enjoyed a
comfortable opening round against Emirates number one Omar Bahrouzyan, winning
6-0 6-3.
The Dubai Tennis Championships, which is owned and organized by Dubai Duty
Free and held under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, UAE, takes place at the
Dubai Tennis Stadium from 24th February to 2nd March.
